Capoeira Decatur participates in Atlanta Streets Alive!

By Juba - Posted on 31 May 2010

Poster from Atlanta Streets Alive May 2010. It reads,

This Sunday, May 23rd, Capoeira Decatur is hosting a capoeira demonstration and free capoeira class for participants at the Atlanta Streets Alive! event. If you aren't familiar with the event, it's a really cool concept.

From their site, they write, "Imagine a street full of people of all ages and backgrounds, walking, biking, creating and laughing, together. A street temporarily closed to cars, but open to people." Imagine those people doing capoeira as well.

Capoeira Decatur is going to set up at Edgewood Ave near Hilliard St. We'll be out in full force, with instruments to boot. This is going to be a jam-packed capoeira weekend!

*** post event ***

What a great event! They say that over 6,000 people went and enjoyed a day in the streets. While I got super sunburned—in fact I just started peeling today—I don't regret a bit of it. We had fun playing for hours and hours, and even got some kids to come and play with us.

Sorriso, who got us involved in the event in the first place, mentioned in a comment that there was some videos and photos of us from the event. Here's a YouTube video:

All I want to know now is: When's the next one!? Well, Hayley Richardson, one of the leads for the event, made this comment via Facebook message:

If you'd like to see Atlanta Streets Alive! happen with increasing frequency in Atlanta, please contact your Councilmember as well as your mayor, Kasim Reed (communications@atlantaga.gov) and let them know you'd be thrilled to have it come to your neighborhood!

Let's do it, guys!

Hey Capoeristas!

Thanks so much for being at Atlanta Streets Alive. There is some video of you showing on the FB Atlanta Streets Alive Group page and also a photo or two on that site as well as www.atlantastreetsalive.com

Next time I will make sure you have more water and shade.

Sorriso

Thanks, Sorriso! I found a couple of photos and some videos as well. That's really awesome. I can't wait for the next Atlanta Streets Alive! event.

Atlanta Streets Alive had amazing "people watching." You forget, even as you play in a street roda, that people are watching you too! Some pictures snapped from cell phone cams will surely surface. Good work to the Maculele students that sweated, sunburned and smiled during the game last Sunday afternoon.
