Capoeira Decatur participates in Atlanta Streets Alive!
This Sunday, May 23rd, Capoeira Decatur is hosting a capoeira demonstration and free capoeira class for participants at the Atlanta Streets Alive! event. If you aren't familiar with the event, it's a really cool concept.
From their site, they write, "Imagine a street full of people of all ages and backgrounds, walking, biking, creating and laughing, together. A street temporarily closed to cars, but open to people." Imagine those people doing capoeira as well.
Capoeira Decatur is going to set up at Edgewood Ave near Hilliard St. We'll be out in full force, with instruments to boot. This is going to be a jam-packed capoeira weekend!

My first encounter with Capoeira & back in the day
For people who have done capoeira for just about any amount of time, I'm sure that you've been asked how you got into it. Everyone has a completely different story. It's something that I like to ask newcomers in class: Not just how they found out about our classes, but why they want to try capoeira. Responses always vary wildly.
Some people had always known about it, and just never found the time. Other people struggled to find a workout regimen that was engaging enough to keep them coming back. Some people show up having no idea what they're getting themselves into—that's where I come from.

Mestranda Edna Lima talks about
After meeting Mestranda Edna Lima at the Miami Mundial in 2009, I was immediately impressed with the level of intellectualism that she brought along with her experience. It seems that she is often introduced as an inspiration for women capoeiristas, which of course she should be, but I believe that she's an inspiration for all capoeiristas.
I found on her website a page wherein someone interviewed Mestranda Edna Lima after I met her. Here's a sample from that interview on how she has used capoeira for what it is really for: Bringing people together and creating positive, social change. Just read it.

Capoeiristas from Capoeira Decatur go to KidsPeace
I live for opportunities like these. I play capoeira to help kids like these.
KidsPeace is a non-profit founded in 1882 that helps kids with all kinds of mental or behavior issues to help them get on the right track. These teens are facing huge obstacles in their lives. The idea was for a handful of capoeiristas to go the KidsPeace location outside of Carrollton, GA—basically Alabama—out and give them some sort of positive activity and experience. Let me tell you how it went down.

Leãozinhos Capoeira Kids Program starts tomorrow
If you've attended capoeira classes in Decatur recently, especially on Saturdays, you've likely noticed the increasing number of kids in class. I'm not sure if it's the season, or what, but it prompted us to open up two additional classes per week, just for kids.
We've dubbed the program "Leãozinhos", or little lions. Yes, I stole the idea from Instrutor Mico's Macaquinhos program which runs in the San Francisco Bay Area and also ran in Miami, Florida. The macaquinhos program inspired more than just the name of our Leãozinhos program.

About the Capoeira Uniform
Capoeira Decatur started its first beginner's program a few weeks back, and it couldn't be going better. The student's are all very diverse from one another, from a six year old to some in their 40s, and a wide range of backgrounds to compliment. The one thing that they all have in common is what brought them together with me: The desire to learn capoeira.
