Projeto Maculelê Batizado: How Capoeira works as a social project

Mestre Fran about to give a new capoeira corda to a small child

20 years ago, Mestre Fran began a social project, called Projeto Maculelê, in a local community just outside of his hometown, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. In a community where a majority of Paraneses don't go, and a plurality are afraid to go for fear of being robbed or worse.

Despite the location's reputation, and despite a lack of support or sponsorship from any organization, private or public, capoeira thrives. Capoeira Maculelê today is largely the result of the work Mestre Fran began in this community.

Back on March 27th, Capoeira Decatur went to the National Association for Multicultural Education, Georgia Chapter's (GA NAME) spring event for a cultural interlude. The cultural interlude is a longstanding part of their events. The purpose is to provide GA NAME members with a presentation that is at once informative, educational, and entertaining. I think Capoeira was a great fit.

Lessons from Mestrando Cocada's workshop

Mestrando Cocada of Capoeira Maculelê New Orleans plays berimbau

Capoeira Decatur invited Mestrando Cocada from Capoeira Maculelê New Orleans to come up for a weekend and give a workshop. We had to move the weekend ahead of schedule, but I can honestly say that the weekend could not have turned out better. As my student, Pikachu, put it, "He is a real pro. I mean, for real, $20 for Mestrando Cocada's workshop? Every capoerista in Atlanta should have been there." And I concur, Piks.
