First ever beginner's capoeira program starts on April 5th
The end of last week, Capoeira Decatur launched the first ever beginner's program. I'm personally very excited about this program. It provides value to anyone who wants to learn capoeira. I wanted to take a moment to just talk about it a little.
Before, when someone decided that they wanted to try class, this is the process she'd go through:

Capoeira is awesome for women
I just ran across this article entitled Capoeira, Fitness, and Feminism. I'm not 100% sure what the author means when she writes, "Some people are committed to bringing feminism to fitness, and vice versa," but I certainly think that what is happening recently in capoeira classes in Atlanta is impressive.

Tony Horton's Bootleg Ginga
On the one hand, it's cool that capoeira basics, like the ginga, are being recognized for their ability to improve fitness. On the other hand, look at this "ginga":
Tony Horton apparently modified the most basic movement of capoeira and put it into a "10 minute workout" that he promises can give people real results. Watch the two-minute commercial and see what you think. Realistically, there is no easy way to "get the body you want" in "10 minutes or less", regardless of how fit the spokespeople are.

It does a person good
Mestre Fran said this last night at the end of class with him. After calling for everyone who enjoyed class to tell their friends (which you should always do), he said that capoeira "only does good for you". It's a great workout, it's culture, its songs bring good energy, and so on. As he said even when you're tired, come to class.
It's true that capoeira is an intense workout, and you're almost guaranteed to get a good sweat and probably become exhausted exerting yourself. But when you're stressed out, or exhausted from a long day, it is all the more important to get yourself back into a good place.
