Blog: The Official Capoeira Decatur Blog

Capoeira students listen to Mestres at the Palesta (Debate) in Brazil in 2008

Capoeira Maculelê is not only committed to offering high quality classes in Decatur, GA, but also to sharing of quality information and philosophy about capoeira. Capoeira, especially today, is about sharing of information. In fact, no information in capoeira is owned by any one person. According to Mestre Bimba, capoeira is an evolving art.

The opinions posted in this blog are Juba's opinions alone, and they do not reflect reality or actuality in capoeira in general. But, isn't that what blogs are for?

I will never say that capoeira is easy, but neither is it difficult. As far as I am concerned—yes, I'm being rhetorical here—it's a truism in capoeira. If you have ever tried capoeira, you no doubt found it to be challenging. But isn't that the mark of a good workout?

Capoeira's complexity makes this even more interesting. Once you get a grip on keeping up in the classes with the physical workouts, you start to realize all of the other dimensions that will challenge you: rhythm, singing, and Portuguese to name a few of the other dimensions. In other words, capoeira challenges you in non-physical ways as well. Is that how you develop total wellness?

During the Just Rodas weekend (Jun 13th and 14th) in Tallahassee, FL, hosted by Estagiario Chegada Aranha and students, I had the privilege of both playing with Mestrando Cocada, of Maculelê New Orleans, and getting to talk to him about capoeira more philosophically and holistically. He very simply issued me this comment, "You're looking light on your feet, Juba."

My two greatest inspirations are visiting us here in Atlanta! There will definitely be workshops and rodas, and a great opportunity to absorb a lot of capoeira in mid-July. If you haven't met these people yet, you'll want to. If you already have, you don't need to read this post.

It's not that capoeira has something to give everyone.

Capoeira is comprehensive. Think about the game of capoeira itself. Mestre always says that capoeira is like a salad: you throw in lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, onions, some of this, and some of that. Salads are configurable, and in the game of capoeira, you don't need to include any of this or that. Capoeira as a whole is even more multifarious: martial arts, dance, acrobatics, music, song, community, philosophy, culture and folklore.
