Biography

When Monitor Juba first moved to Georgia to go to school, he arrived with an open mind and an inclination to try new things. Without any concept of what capoeira was, he accepted an invitation of a fellow classmate to try it out. In September 2003, he tried his very first class with Mestre Fran, the founder and leader of Grupo Maculelê, at Emory University's Student Activity & Academic Center. He has practiced capoeira ever since and quickly earned the capoeira nickname of "Juba".

Monitor Juba has helped plan and coordinate events in Atlanta. In addition, he has traveled to Grupo Maculelê's Brazilian headquarters in Londrina, Paraná four times to attend capoeira events and to train. He co-founded a capoeira club at Oxford College of Emory University, serving as its President. Since 2005, he has been a Fitness Emory Instructor at Emory's Woodruff Physical Education Center. With over 650 volunteer hours teaching capoeira, Juba currently he teaches classes at Several Dancers Core in Decatur, GA and at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Juba's primary objective is to offer the highest quality capoeira instruction as possible. In pursuit of this objective, Juba is committed to traveling to Londrina, Paraná, Brasil at least annually. There, he improves his own skills, keeps current on trends in capoeira, and develops capoeira-teaching methods.

Outside of capoeira, Juba is a Business Analyst and Project Manager for a consulting firm that specializes in adult and continuing education. In addition to improving business practices and processes, he is also a Certified Technical Trainer.
