How to Prepare for your First Capoeira Class
Before coming to you first capoeira class in Decatur, go through the following checklist to make sure that you're prepared:
- Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes that you like to workout in. Pants are better than shorts. If you have abadás (capoeira uniform), wear them.
- If you have any physical concerns or conditions, be sure to inform your instructor. This is true of any activity, and a lot of the movements in capoeira can be quite challenging. That said, there are always workaround for everyone.
- Be prepared to train bare foot, although it is not always required. Often times, the floors we practice on are delicate floors for dancing. That means they scuff easily. It also means that they are very gentle on your feet!
- Come with an open mind and a positive attitude. If you do not have fun in class, we did not do our job. Help us out by coming with enthusiasm.
- Finally ... Bring a friend! Sharing something new with people you love makes it that much more enjoyable, more exciting, and easier.
What to Expect in Class
All classes begin with a warm and stretching. After this, the class divides up to give absolute beginners the special attention they need to learn the very basics of capoeira. Movements and sequences of movements are trained both individually and with partners. Then, at the end of class, we finish up with a roda, where capoeira is traditionally played. This is where we clap, make music, show off our new moves, and have a great time!
No one, in any class, is required to do anything, and working out at your own pace is critical. Nothing is worse than starting a new routine too quickly. Doing capoeira is about self-expression, and training capoeira is about self-development. Take it slow: capoeira is guaranteed to give you positive results.
Soreness
After your first class, you should expect a healthy amount of soreness. Soreness is common when beginning any new sport or exercise regimen. Capoeira is no different. In fact, soreness is generally a sign of a good workout and the first sign of a healthier lifestyle. However, here are a few tips:
Refrain from cursing the relative of anyone from class if you do experience soreness.
At a minimum, be sure to stretch before bed and again when you wake up in the morning. Even if you are a very active individual, capoeira has a knack for finding some muscles to make sore. Regular stretching is the key to reducing soreness and avoiding injury. Be sure to drink plenty of water to expedite recovery. If you experience any abnormalities in any physical practice, be sure to let your instructor know as soon as possible. Your overall health and wellness is our priority.
We always like to say that the only real cure for the soreness is more capoeira. We look forward to seeing you in class! If you haven't already, take your first step towards starting capoeira and fill out our preregistration form.
