Beginner's Capoeira Program

Capoeira is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and probably the most fun you'll have getting a great workout. It is a Brazilian movement form that incorporates martial arts, dance, and song with acrobatics, cleverness, and cunning. It is a dynamic physical and cultural form of expression. In this course, you'll become proficient in all of the basic movements, preparing you for more advanced classes; you'll develop your strength, flexibility, and endurance while having a great time; and you'll become part of the growing community of capoeiristas throughout the US and world.

Tuition includes the uniform and corda (the belt) which is awarded on the last day of class to signify your proficiency in the Capoeira basics, for one individual.

Learning Objectives

This program is designed to get you prepared for more regular, rigorous capoeira training. At the end of this program, you will be able to do all of the following:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all of the basic movements of Capoeira, including attacks, defenses, and basic acrobatic movements
  • Explain principles of good form in Capoeira including how to move efficiently and without injury
  • Develop your flexibility, strength, and endurance all while having a lot of fun
  • Identify differences between the various styles of Capoeira: Angola, Regional, and Contemporanea
  • Earn your first Capoeira belt by the end of the program
  • Demonstrate basic Capoeira etiquette and visit any Capoeira group in the world

Program Outline

Each week of the 8-week program, there is a theme. Each class, you will practice the basic movements. By the end you will have a good understanding of all the fundamental movements in capoeira, learn a few cool acrobatic movements, and be able to explain some of the major, important philosophical themes in capoeira. Here's a breakdown of what you'll be doing each of the 8 weeks:

  1. Fundamentals of Capoeira as a dance and martial art, and a brief history of Capoeira
  2. Developing concepts of ataque and defesa: Capoeira as a conversation
  3. Moving around the roda and an introduction to music
  4. Mandinga: Illusion and trickery in Capoeira
  5. Movimentos de chão: Ground movements
  6. Acrobacias: Basic acrobatics in the game of Capoeira
  7. Sequências: Advanced partner sequences
  8. Graduation week & workshop with guest teacher
